A way of seeing, knowing and acting in service of life.
The Octa Methodology is a framework for understanding the world and acting within it. It is organised by three goals and works across eight aspects of life, through eight sections of work, across scales.
Three goals in service of human freedom.
The Methodology is organised by three goals: Unity, Self-Sufficiency and Discretion. They set what the work aims for, and they are the criteria every solution is weighed against. Together they serve human freedom and the long-term flourishing of life on Earth.
Unity
Voluntary cooperation and balanced coexistence among the eight cultures of Earth.
Unity is not uniformity. It means strengthening relationships without erasing difference, imposing conformity or placing human culture above the rest of life.
Freedom through cooperation that is chosen, not imposed.
Self-Sufficiency
The capacity of people and places to meet their essential needs through regenerative systems and the responsible use of resources.
Self-Sufficiency is not isolation. It means reducing dependency, so communities can endure, adapt and take part in the wider world from a position of strength.
Freedom through the ability to stand on your own.
Discretion
Sound judgement about what to share, with whom, and when.
Discretion is not secrecy. It brings together consent, privacy, security and appropriate transparency, with communication that is sensitive to timing, audience and context.
Freedom through the right to decide what is shared, and with whom.
Across every scale
— click any ring to read its threshold · the journey begins at Scale 01 —
Eight Scales · The Journey Begins at One
Scale 01 is the source. Every wider scale is what becomes possible from there.
The eight scales are numbered inward to outward. Scale 01 is the Individual walking the Way of Knowledge. Scale 02 is the Ecoregion. Each higher scale is earned only after the one beneath it has been unified. Beyond the solar system scale lie the galactic and the universal. They are part of the Methodology’s horizon, but beyond the scope of our work today. Click any ring to read its threshold.
The goals hold at every scale, but how they’re expressed changes with the scale and the place. Solutions at one scale should align with the needs and goals of the larger scales around them. The application differs from place to place. The direction stays the same.
Beyond the solar system scale lie the galactic and the universal. They are part of the Methodology’s horizon, but beyond the scope of our work today.
Eight aspects. One living world.
Each aspect defines a domain of knowledge and analytical lens. Used together, they show a holistic picture. Their emphasis shifts with the purpose and place of the work.

The Eight-Fold Body
Each aspect cuts the world its own way; each pair of aspects shapes the next century.
The diagram is a perfect octagon. The eight vertices are the eight aspects of Octa Cultures — Ecological, Social, Political, Biological, Mental, Technological, Economic, Spiritual. The twenty-eight chords connecting them are the twenty-eight unique inter-aspect relationships, each a real and ongoing influence between two ways of seeing the planet. Together they make the Relationship Matrix — the connective tissue beneath the framework.
Ecological
The physical conditions of life on Earth, seen through four forces: Light (cosmological), Air (atmospheric), Water (hydrological) and Earth (geological). Their interactions shape climate, environmental change and extreme weather.
Biological
Living systems, seen through the eight cultures of life: Human, Animal, Plant, Insect, Aquatic, Algae, Fungi and Bacteria. It also covers the habitats, biological hotspots and migration corridors through which life is spread and sustained.
Economic
Labour, Capital, Resources and Trade, and how they shape the production, exchange and use of value within ecological limits.
Political
Sovereignty, power, diplomacy, governance and legitimacy. That is, how authority is organised, exercised and contested across institutions and territories.
Social
Demography, family and community, identity and belonging, and the norms, networks and patterns through which people organise life together.
Technological
Tools, infrastructure, computation, code, data and interfaces. These are the systems that extend and organise human capability.
Mental
Cognition, perception, emotion, memory and knowledge, and the individual and shared mental environments through which people interpret experience and decide how to act.
Spiritual
Meaning, purpose, practice, inheritance, and what individuals and cultures hold sacred, including religious and spiritual traditions, rituals and values.
The four forces of each aspect.
Each aspect stands on four forces, and each force is a unit of Octa Curriculum. These are the curriculum’s own words. Choose an aspect, then a force.
🌍 Ecological · Life
- ☀️ Light · Cosmology. The energy of the Sun and the cosmos. Sunlight warms the planet, powers the winds and the water cycle, and feeds plants, which feed almost all other life. The Sun’s path through the sky makes our days, nights and seasons.
- 💧 Water · Hydrology. Oceans, rivers, lakes, rain, ice and water hidden underground. Every living thing needs water. It moves endlessly in the water cycle, carving valleys, carrying nutrients and storing the Sun’s heat in the sea.
- ⛰️ Earth · Geology. The solid planet: rock, minerals and soil, and the hot interior that moves the plates, builds mountains and feeds volcanoes. Soil, where rock meets life, is where most of our food grows.
- 🌪️ Air · Atmosphere. The blanket of gases around the planet. It gives us oxygen to breathe and carbon dioxide for plants, carries heat and rain around the world as wind and weather, and shields life from harmful rays.
🌱 Biological · Life
- 🧑 Human. People and how we live in, shape and depend on every biome: our food, homes, cultures and choices.
- 🦊 Animal. Mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians: creatures with backbones that walk, fly, climb and hunt.
- 🌱 Plant. Trees, grasses, flowers and mosses. They turn sunlight into food and feed almost all other life.
- 🐝 Insect. Bees, ants, beetles and butterflies: small six-legged creatures that pollinate, clean up and feed others.
- 🍄 Fungi. Mushrooms, moulds and yeasts. Earth’s recyclers, breaking down dead things into new soil.
- 🍃 Algae. Tiny sunlight-eaters of water and wet places. They make a huge share of the oxygen we breathe.
- 🐟 Aquatic. Life of rivers, lakes and oceans: fish, corals, crabs, dolphins and whales.
- 🦠 Bacteria. Single cells too small to see, living everywhere, even inside you, and keeping the planet running.
🪙 Economic · Household
- 🛠️ Labor · Human capital. The time, effort, skill and care of people. Paid work in fields, factories, shops and offices counts, and so does unpaid work at home: cooking, cleaning, caring for children and elders.
- 🏦 Capital · Money and finance. What has been saved and built up from past work: money, tools, machines, buildings, roads and know-how. Capital helps a household get through hard times and makes work easier.
- ⛏️ Resources · Natural endowment. Everything the economy takes from the Earth: land, soil, water, forests, fish, minerals and energy. Every single product begins as a resource.
- 🚢 Trade · Exchange. Exchange between people: goods for goods, goods for money, help for help. Trade lets a household get what it cannot make itself, and share what it has in surplus.
🏛️ Political · The people
- 🗺️ Sovereignty · State & Territory. The first claim every people makes: it draws a line on the Earth and says, “within this, we decide.” Borders, territory and the constitution that says who has the last word over a place and its people.
- 🏛️ Power · Governance & Authority. Sovereignty put to work: the leaders, ministries, parliaments, courts, police and armed forces that turn decisions into daily life. At Octa we look at power as providership: power exists to provide for and protect the people, not to rule over them.
- ⚖️ Legitimacy · Rights & Rule of Law. The answer to the oldest question in politics: “Why should I obey?” Consent, rights, fair laws and courts, and the feeling that the rules apply to everyone, even the rulers. It is the scarcest treasure a people can hold.
- 🤝 Diplomacy · Alliances & World Order. How separate peoples live side by side: talks, treaties, alliances, the United Nations, and the wars that break out when talking fails. Diplomacy turns 195 separate states into one world order.
🤝 Social · A people
- 🏺 Traditions · Heritage & Inheritance. What a people already is when a child is born into it: the language spoken before the child can answer, the faith that shapes the calendar of the year, the kin it may call family, and the rituals that open a life and close it.
- 🌊 Trends · Movement & The New. The live currents of the present: new generations, new tools, new migrations and new things to pay attention to. What is arriving, what is rearranging the weave from within, and what is leaving without being mourned.
- 🤝 Convention · Norms & The Shared Floor. The shared floor of daily life: households, the roles inside them, manners and greetings, and the trust that lets strangers share a road, a market or a queue without any speeches. The quietest pillar, and the one that holds the most.
- 🪜 Status · Hierarchy & Recognition. The ladders of every society: wealth, learning, honour and the chance to move up. Each civilisation grants dignity in its own coin. The Atlas mission asks for status grounded in service, not in appetite.
⚙️ Technological · The tool
- 💻 Compute · Hardware & Processing. The physical machines that turn electricity into calculation: chips etched with billions of tiny switches, the foundries that make them, the datacentres that house them, and the power they burn. The floor every other pillar stands on.
- 🧩 Code · Software & Algorithms. The instructions every machine obeys: programs, operating systems, the free commons of open code written by volunteers, and the AI models that are no longer written line by line but grown from data.
- 🌐 Data · Information & Networks. Everything that flows and is kept: cables under the sea, satellites above, clouds of stored files, and the records about every one of us. Who may read it, move it and keep it is one of the great questions of this century.
- 📱 Interface · The Human-Machine Surface. The surface where the machine meets a human life: screens, voices, feeds and assistants, and soon devices worn on the body and even inside it. The interface decides what we notice, what we choose and what we ignore.
🧠 Mental · A mind
- ☀️ Expressions · The radiance. What goes out from a mind: words, faces, voices, art, ideas and example. Every mind is a small source of light in the shared field. A truthful expression lights up the space around it; a false or careless one dims it. Most of what people say repeats what they have heard; an expression that comes from your own clear thinking is rarer, and it travels further than you can see.
- 🌬️ Emotions · The winds. The winds that move across minds: fear, joy, anger, grief and hope, passing from one person to the next and sweeping through a crowd. Emotions are weather on the surface of the mind, not the ground beneath it. The skill is not to stop the wind, nor to obey it, but to feel it fully and stay the one who watches and chooses.
- ⛰️ Forces · The terrain. What holds minds in place: lasting beliefs, traditions, institutions, groups and the pressures of daily life. Forces are the terrain, the ground of the mental world, which shapes how thought flows, as mountains shape rivers. Some forces protect us and some pull us off course. We cannot flatten the mountains, but we can learn which paths we follow.
- 💧 Impressions · The waters. What flows in: everything we see, hear and read, every conversation, feed and headline. Impressions are the waters every mind swims in, and they have no walls: a mood in one place seeps into many others. We cannot live outside the water, but we can train what we take in and what we return to.
✨ Spiritual · A life
- 🤝 Relationships. Relationships are where Knowledge is most often recognised.
- 🏃 Health. The body is the vehicle of your life in the world, and it needs care, not neglect and not worship.
- 🔨 Work and Providership. Work is where you learn discipline and contribute.
- 💎 Spiritual Development. This is the pillar most people forget, and the one that gives the others their direction.
How they connect
No aspect stands alone. How we produce and consume is shaped by what we value and believe. In turn, it reshapes ecosystems, and those ecosystems shape the lives of every culture on Earth. A problem in one aspect always shows up in the others, and so does a solution.

Balance and integration.
Ecological balance
Life depends on the balance of four forces:
- Light drives photosynthesis and the rhythms of life.
- Air sustains breathing and the balance of the atmosphere.
- Water carries hydration, purification and circulation.
- Earth provides soil, nutrients, materials and stable ground.
Work that disturbs this balance undermines everything that depends on it.
Biological integration
The eight cultures form one living system, and each has equal standing. None should thrive at the expense of the others. In a well-designed system, relationships are symbiotic: one culture’s waste becomes another’s resource, outside inputs are kept to a minimum, and the whole system grows more resilient over time.
This is where the goals become concrete. Equal standing is Unity in practice, and closed loops are Self-Sufficiency in practice.
- mutualism
- commensalism
- predation
- parasitism
- competition
Eight sections. One continuous process.
The sections give the work a general sequence. It runs from purpose and place, through analysis and development, to implementation. The eight aspects inform every section, and how they combine changes with the mission and context of each undertaking.
- Objective & Goals: Sets the purpose, intended outcomes, scope and priorities, along with the criteria that will guide the work. Those criteria are grounded in the three goals.
- Mission and Location: Defines the mission within its place: where the work happens, its ecoregion, and the conditions that shape it.
- Data Collection: Gathers, verifies and structures the information needed to understand the subject across all eight aspects.
- Impact of Activities: Analyses how activities produce impacts across the eight aspects, both now and over time, and how those impacts interact and compound.
- Risk Assessment: Weighs the risks and opportunities those impacts create, including their likelihood, significance, timing and interdependence.
- Trend Forecasting: Models plausible futures from past and current information, identifying patterns, signals and scenarios.
- Concept Development: Develops concepts, solutions and designs in response to what the earlier sections reveal.
- Work Specification: Turns concepts into the requirements, instructions, resources and deliverables needed for implementation.
Seeing, knowing, acting
The sections also trace a path that any participant will recognise. Sections 1 and 2 establish purpose and place. Seeing happens through data collection, impact, risk and trend analysis (Sections 3–6). Knowing builds through that analysis and comes together in concept development (Section 7). Acting begins with the work specification (Section 8).
Go deeper · Work philosophy
Soft work and hard work, in one loop.
The sections are not a straight line. The work moves back and forth between two kinds:
- Soft work: Research, analysis, design and planning.
- Hard work: Building, implementing and operating in the physical world.
What’s learned on the ground feeds back into the sections, so each cycle sharpens the next. It’s a positive feedback loop. No solution is final, and the work stays open to improvement as conditions, knowledge and technology change.
A framework for action, not just understanding.
In education
Octa Curriculum introduces each of the eight aspects from first principles.
In preservation
Each preservation opportunity will be weighed within its ecoregional context and through all eight aspects.
In enterprise
Octa Cultures will hold the Nature and Methodology seat in each Octa enterprise. From that seat it will help keep their work aligned with the Methodology and accountable to nature.
Held by Octa Cultures. Applied across the Octa ecosystem.
The Octa Methodology grew out of the research that founded Octa Cultures, and it has kept evolving as it has been applied to new areas of work. Octa Cultures holds the Methodology. Octa HQ, the incubator founded to support Octa Cultures, creates the environment and the capacities to apply the Methodology across projects and enterprises.
