Octa Curriculum privacy notice
This notice explains what Octa Curriculum keeps about the people who learn with it, and why.
Last updated 15 October 2026
Who we are
Octa Curriculum is the curriculum of Octa Cultures, an organisation in formation within the Octa HQ incubator. Until Octa Cultures is incorporated as its own entity, Octa HQ is responsible for the information Octa Curriculum keeps, as it is for the Octa Cultures website.
For privacy questions or requests, contact legal@octahq.xyz.
This notice covers the curriculum. The Octa Cultures website has its own notice.
Who it is for
Octa Curriculum is for teachers and for learners aged 13 to 16 and above. It is private: anyone can make an Octa Account, but only the people Octa selects are given a role in Octa Curriculum (learner, teacher or designer), and only they can open its pages. The Global Curriculum page is open to everyone. The Octa Curriculum team invites teachers; learners join through their teacher or by asking us. The team then gives each person their role.
What we keep
- Your Octa Account: your name and email address, used to sign you in. This notice covers your Octa Account as it is used for Octa Curriculum.
- Your role in Octa Curriculum: learner, teacher or designer, once it is given to you, and who gave it and when.
- Your country, if you choose to give it: Octa Curriculum asks for it so your teachers know where you learn from. You may leave it out.
- Your age group: whether you are 16 or over. If you are under 16, also your year of birth, your parent’s email address, and whether and when your parent answered.
- Your learning, once it may be kept with your name: each quiz you finish (the lesson, your score and the total), the lessons you have passed, and how long each lesson was open in front of you, counted by day.
- What you write: comments, issues and corrections you send about a lesson, when you are allowed to send them.
We do not ask for your address, your school, your photo or any health information.
Learners under 16
If you tell us you are under 16, we ask a parent first. We send one email to the address you give, with a link where your parent can say yes or no.
Until your parent agrees, only the first lesson is open to you, and nothing about your learning is kept with your name. You cannot send comments until then.
We use your parent’s email address only to ask for their answer and to keep a record of it.
How we use it
We use this information to sign you in, to open the next lesson when you pass the one before, to let you come back to where you are on the mountain of learning, and to let the Octa Curriculum team guide learners and improve the lessons.
Every lesson opens from the front page of its curriculum. To keep it that way, when you open a lesson we look at which page of the curriculum you came from. We do not keep it.
We do not sell it, use it for advertising, or show learners in rankings.
If you are 16 or over, we use this information to give you the curriculum you joined and, in our legitimate interest, to improve the lessons. If you are under 16, we rely on your parent’s yes, which your parent can take back at any time.
Who can see it
You can see your own progress. The Octa Curriculum team, the people who design the path up the mountain and guide learners, can see each learner’s name, email address, age group, parent’s answer, place on the mountain, latest quiz result and the time they have given.
At launch, only the Octa Curriculum team sees learners’ progress; no teachers outside Octa do. We may also disclose information where required by law.
Live data in the lessons
Some lessons show live data from scientific services, such as weather, earthquakes, space weather, rain radar and geology. Some of that data comes through Octa Curriculum’s own relay, so your device does not ask those services for it directly.
Maps in the lessons load their pictures from Esri’s map service, and some lessons ask public services for data directly from your browser, such as the World Bank, Wikipedia, Our World in Data, Open-Meteo, UNHCR, NASA, NOAA and GDACS. These services see your device’s internet address, as any website you visit does; they are not told who you are.
Where it is kept
Octa Curriculum and the Octa Platform are hosted on our own server in the European Union. The email to parents is sent by our email provider, Purelymail.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you take part in Octa Curriculum. When you leave, or ask us to, it is deleted at the latest in our next autumn clean-up, when we remove the data we no longer need.
Cookies
Octa Curriculum sets one cookie that keeps you signed in for up to 30 days, and a short one that lasts ten minutes while you sign in. Both are needed for the curriculum to work. We do not use analytics, advertising trackers or tracking cookies.
Your choices and rights
Depending on the law that applies to you, you may ask to access, correct, delete, restrict or obtain certain personal information, or object to how it is used. A parent may make these requests for a child under 16. Contact legal@octahq.xyz to make a request. We may need to verify your identity before acting on it. To have your information deleted, write to legal@octahq.xyz, or leave Octa Curriculum: your account, role, progress and comments are then erased.
You may also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Changes
We will update this notice and its date when Octa Cultures is incorporated, or when the way Octa Curriculum handles information changes.
